The ‘salty’ option for bass fishing kayakers

Perhaps it’s the briny name, but Old Town’s 12-foot Salty is below the radar for most bass anglers. Yet, Old Town’s nearly bulletproof pedal drive, fishy features and price of $2,200 make this nimble yak a value that bass seekers should consider. We checked one out courtesy of WaterDog Outfitters in Whitehall, Mich.
The open bow area makes it easy to pack for an overnight expedition or take along a canine companion.
Note the sturdy bow handle and the drain plug positioned at the tip of the bow deck, where it can thoroughly drain the under-deck space.
A molded-in space behind the comfortable chair is great for a small cooler, dry bag or area for drying off lures.
A port-side, forward-facing rod holder is great for changing lures or unhooking fish, while the rudder control features a tension knob that allows you to set the rudder straight for hands-free pedaling.
The aft deck is enormous, with ample space for a crate and more. Weighing 104 pounds with the seat and drive, the Salty is rated to carry up to 346 pounds. Its 34.5-inch width gives it great stability. For more information, check out oldtowncanoe.com.
